Dundurn Press is pleased to announce the publication of Strength of Conviction, by NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, on August 1, 2015. Mulcair has been called the strongest opposition leader of the television era. Serving as an intimate portrait of the man behind the politician, the book will offer unique insight into the values that motivate Tom Mulcair and the experiences that have shaped his political journey, beliefs, and vision.

“Tom Mulcair is a new kind of leader, and his timely book is a bold testament to the values that have shaped his remarkable career,” says Kirk Howard, president and publisher of Dundurn. “Needless to say, we are privileged to be publishing this important work.”

This engaging autobiography tells the story of a man and his principles — a man who has dedicated over 35 years to public service in Canada. It details his life growing up in a family of ten children, and his rise to become the leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and potentially Canada’s next prime minister.

Elected to the Quebec National Assembly in 1994, Tom Mulcair quickly rose through the ranks, gaining a reputation as a competent and rigorous politician. There, he served as the Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks from 2003–2006. Taking a principled stand, Mulcair decided to leave cabinet rather than allow the Parc National du Mont Orford to fall into the hands of private interest. Jack Layton later invited him to join the federal NDP and serve as his Quebec lieutenant. Tom went on to win the first Quebec NDP seat in a general election, and in May 2011 helped deliver a majority of NDP seats in the province, propelling the NDP to become the Official Opposition of Canada for the first time in history. Mulcair will run for the office of prime minster in October 2015.

Strength of Conviction will be available in English on August 1st through booksellers everywhere, in print and ebook form. It will be published simultaneously in French by Michelle Tisseyre Éditeur under the title Le courage de ses convictions.
